An overheating computer spells trouble. Especially when the lifeline of your work depends on your computer, and no one wants to self-overheat because of stress or have an overheated PC. Besides the strong possibility that overheating will shorten the lifespan of your computer, it can also cause your PC to slow down. And when your computer slows down, you will end up in utter dismay and be under an unbearable amount of stress. So to avoid this, here are some tips to cool down your computer, especially when you need to work all day.

1. Do not block your PC’s air ventilators

Just like the radiator of a car prevents the engine from overheating, the computer has been provided with fans and cooling vents to maintain the flow of cool and hot air in the system. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say they function as the lungs of the computer, and you really don’t want to be messing around with them. It is the lack of proper ventilation that is the major cause of overheating.

So to avoid it, leave your laptop on a hard surface like a desk or countertop, and don’t leave it on your bed, as heavy comforters can clog ducts and make it difficult for them to breathe. You could also try to provide some elevation beneath the laptop, like placing a book or buying a laptop stand, to allow more airflow beneath the laptop where the ventilation is usually located.

2. Clean your PC’s fans and vents

Dust and debris clog the air vents, making them the mother of all overheating problems since they impede the air flow. The accumulation of dust and lint on the fan causes it to work harder and become noisier as a result. A layer of this filth, which acts as an insulator, covering other heat generating parts such as the RAM and the hard disk, can also be a cause of overheating.

So all you need to do is a little computer maintenance task to maintain cleanliness on your PC. You can use a slightly damp cloth to ensure that air vents are clean. If you think you cannot do it and are quite scared, there are also professionals that will do it for you.

3. Avoid working in a hot environment

Ensuring a cool environment for your laptop can also help you minimize overheating. Also, check your surroundings to see if there are other devices that emit hot air right into it. A cooler room will not just help you minimize your PC’s overheating but will also allow you to work comfortably. Two birds in one stone, isn’t it?

4. Give it a rest

Computers are like humans too. Like us, they also need a rest. So if you notice that your computer is getting too hot compared to usual, maybe it’s time for you and your computer to have a rest or a break. Also, like humans who immediately feel sleepy when overworked, computers also automatically shut down when overheated. After about an hour, your laptop should not be overheating with both of you and your PC well rested.

Usually, you do not need a troubleshooter or computer engineer as you can fix your laptop overheating issue with your basic computer knowledge. However, if you still find that your computer’s overheating issue is not solved and you experience your laptop shutting down frequently, then perhaps your laptop’s hardware is damaged, and it’s time to consult an expert.
